A nostalgic and exciting visit to Kurekozuki, a retro-themed cultural event held at Dobashi Market in Yame City, with kendama games, chalk art, live music, and more.
I recently visited the Dobashi Market in Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture with my son to attend a local event called “Kurekozuki”.
The event was held in the nostalgic atmosphere of Dobashi Market, featuring unique local vendors and live performances.
It was our first time attending, and it turned out to be a truly enjoyable day.
Standing at the entrance, I felt as if we had stepped back in time to the Showa era.
The vintage vibe of the market was refreshing and quite different from modern renovation spots.
Walking through the narrow alleys of the market, I admired the old wooden pillars and traditional architecture, which exuded a nostalgic charm.
Inside the market, there was a kendama (traditional Japanese toy) booth.
My son was instantly intrigued and gave it a try.
I was amazed at how quickly a first grader can absorb new skills — after a few tries, he successfully landed the ball on the cup!
The retro snack bar sign in the background added to the market's distinctive atmosphere.
At one of the booths, we tried roasting marshmallows over a kerosene heater — a perfect treat on a cold winter day.
There was a corner where kids could draw freely with chalk on the ground.
My son enthusiastically drew a bright red sun.
Around 3 p.m., there were modern-style folk music performances and a rap act by the owner of our friend’s café, “squáre knòt”.
Later, huge red and blue oni figures appeared and paraded through the shrine area — my son was startled and hilariously ran away!
The “Kurekozuki” event was a wonderful mix of retro nostalgia and modern culture, blending old-time market charm with new creative experiences.
My son enjoyed the many activities, and I was glad he had a chance to interact with a cultural space he doesn’t often see.
Through moments like these, I hope children can grow up with a deeper appreciation for different cultures and senses of beauty.
